Description
Thirteen-year-old Annie, a Cherokee girl, lives with her family along the Chattahoochee River, within the old Cherokee Nation near present-day Johns Creek, Georgia. As a prosperous member of the Wild Potato Clan, Annie’s family plays a significant role in Cherokee and United States history. However, their prominence has made them a source of contention, including angering Principal Chief John Ross.
Annie’s older brothers are involved in drafting the controversial Treaty of New Echota, which proposes relocating most Cherokees west of the Mississippi River. The prospect of this treaty fills Annie with a mix of anger, fear, and uncertainty.
Supported by her loyal dog, Stardust, and her best friend, Two Moons Dancing, a Wolf Clan warrior, Annie embarks on a journey of self-discovery and resilience. As the events surrounding the treaty unfold, she grapples with her identity and her aspirations to embody the strength and character of a Cherokee woman.
Annie must confront these challenges and prove to herself whether she has the strength and substance she believes is characteristic of Cherokee women. Will she succeed in becoming a formidable and resilient young woman amid the turmoil?
