Comments Regarding Indigenous Fraud
We in North America are witnessing an explosion of indigenous fraud. Watchdog groups serving as whistleblowers are identifying and calling out those falsely claiming American Indian heritage. Much of this behavior occurs in academia with astonishing frequency. Many entertainers, academics, and other notable personalities profess Cherokee heritage when it simply isn’t there. Though not a new phenomenon, it is flourishing and threatens tribal sovereignty. Gadugi Media and Bryan D. Jackson strive to maintain integrity.
It is important that readers understand a distinction. I am a well-documented Cherokee descendant, but not a tribal citizen. The first is a genuine ancestral lineage, and the second is a legislative, political designation based on a nation-to-nation relationship. The reader should know that I don’t classify my stories as “Indian literature.” I write as a human being first and foremost, who just happens to have legitimate Cherokee ancestors about whom I love to create stories. Some of the characters in my books portray Cherokee Nation citizens or enrolled members of other tribes. I try to create fresh narratives that entertain and inform. My Cherokee Nation satellite communities claim me as Cherokee, for which I am honored and grateful. They and the tribe can decide whether I am a Cherokee author. For those who cannot do that, think of me as an author who writes narratives to honor those ancestors who came before me.
If you encounter indigenous fraud, please contact the appropriate authorities. The advancement of the Internet opens doors for many who lie about their heritage. A frightening number of professors and some contemporary authors proclaim Native American heritage, even when disproved. They are stealing from tribal citizens who might otherwise benefit. We at Gadugi Media do not fall into that category and encourage others to ask questions and thoughtfully investigate when concerned or confused about indigenous claims.
Wado (thank you),
Bryan D. Jackson
